AMY LEESON Obituary

AMY LEESON, 71, of Fort Wayne, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2021, after a short yet courageous battle with cancer. Born Oct. 26, 1949 in Garrett, Ind., she was the daughter of Audrey Leeson Jay and Roger Leeson and Glenn Jay. Amy lived her life as a loving and devoted sister, daughter, aunt, and loyal friend. Her greatest pleasures came from having dinner and wine with friends, sitting on the Purdue football bleachers, watching movies and Broadway shows, shopping for new shoes, or finding adventures in her many travels. Family times were her favorite times. As a passionate educator she was dedicated to getting the most from her students while giving the most of herself. Amy was an avid and accomplished writer. She used her talents to contribute to various causes and was an advocate for social justice. Amy graduated Garrett High School in 1967. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Ball State University, a Masters of Education degree from Purdue University and a Specialist in Education degree from Indiana University. Amy taught in Thorntown, Ind., and Waycross, Ga., before returning to Indiana. Amy was a teacher and reading specialist at Norwell High School. After leaving public education, she had the unique accomplishment of becoming the program director at both Region 8 and Region 7 Educational Services. Amy recently retired after her years of dedicated service in her beloved field of education. Amy had a spirit and presence that will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. Amy is survived by two sisters, Susan (Darryl) Whittington, of Waterloo, Ind. and Rebecca Jay of Carnation, Wash.; two brothers, David Jay of Ellensburg, Wash. and Ted Jay of Wake Forest, N.C. Nine nieces and nephews were her pride and joy. Private family services will be held. Memorial contributions can be made to AVOW (Advancing Voices of Women), c/o Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, 555 E. Wayne St., Fort Wayne (IN 46802); Purdue College of Education, Dean's Discretionary Fund, ATTN: Dean Nancy Marchand-Martella, Beering Hall, 100 N. University St., West Lafayette (IN 47907). Ms Leeson was one of my favorite teachers and academic coaches. She sponsored the first academics team at Norwell. We were her crainiacs and we came home with our shields or on them from meets. She was caring, creative, funny and so much to so many people. The world was a better place because of her! So much to thank her for!

Amy was a legend in the State of Indiana! I will miss her sassy humor and kind spirit greatly. Having had the opportunity to work with Amy for over 23 years, I was blessed to know her and learn from her desire for student learning through solid curriculum. Amy will always be my "Q of C" as I called her - the Queen of Curriculum! Amy will be and is missed.

Amy and I would go on walks and talk about her many travel adventures and her beloved family. I will miss seeing her as my neighbor. May she rest in peace in her heavenly home. My condolances to her entire family.

I got to know Amy only briefly during our trip to Alaska in June of 2019. She is quite the world traveller and very knowledgable on many topics. She will be missed by many...

As a teacher, Ms. Leeson was instrumental in my development, dragging me into drama club to shed some of my shyness, and exposing me to a new set of life-coping skills. As a woman, Amy was inspirational - giving me permission through her own advocacy actions to stand up for and champion the voices of the minimized and underprivileged. In her absence, a powerful legacy will remain forever, through the generations of those she touched.

Amy was one of the most passionate educators I know. She taught wonderful classes for adult educators. She was a mentor to me as a curriculum director. I’m so sorry to hear of her passing. May it bring her family some comfort to hear all the wonderful memories we have of Amy. Her laugh was infectious. She will be missed.
